Why own physical media at all?
Streaming libraries change, films vanish, and picture quality is compressed to fit your bandwidth. A disc is yours forever, often in far better quality, with commentaries, restorations and extras a stream never carries. For the films you love, ownership is the point.
The three formats, explained
- 4K UHD The best possible picture, higher resolution and HDR. Ideal for modern blockbusters and major restorations. Usually includes a standard Blu-ray too.
- Blu-ray The collector's workhorse, excellent quality, wide availability, and the format most catalog titles live on.
- Criterion The gold standard for classics and world cinema: definitive restorations, deep extras, and beautiful packaging. Watch for their regular 50%-off sales.
How to start
Don't try to buy everything. Begin with the essential cornerstones, the films you'll rewatch for life, then go deep on what you love: a favorite director, a decade, or a single genre. A focused shelf of 40 great discs beats 400 you'll never revisit.
Beyond the majors: boutique labels
Some of the best editions come from specialist labels who restore and celebrate cinema: Criterion, Arrow, Kino Lorber, Shout!/Scream Factory, Vinegar Syndrome and Radiance. If a film has a boutique edition, it's usually the one to own.

- Wait for label sales, Criterion runs half-price flash sales; boutique labels discount often.
- Check the disc region before buying imports; a region-free player opens up the world's best editions.
- 4K discs usually bundle the Blu-ray, you rarely need both separately.
- Steelbooks look great but rarely improve the transfer; buy them for love, not quality.
